Thrall-built 4727 cf Carbon Black hopper for MSTS

Original model by George Mathews II. Wagon and SD file modifications by L. W. Shell. Texture modifications by L. W. Shell. Bin coupler modifications by Otto Prieger et al.

Unzip this folder directly to your Trainset folder. (Alternately, unzip this folder to any location convenient to you, then Move or Copy it to your Trainset folder.) Create a consist using this car, and enjoy.

This car was built in 1996 by Thrall; it has a capacity of 4727 cubic feet, and is dedicated to carbon black loading (think soot, laser toner or lampblack). Carbon black is usually manufactured where natural gas is abundant, and is used primarily in the manufacture of tires, and is also used to make toners, pigments, and inks.

Notice that even though this car has a conventional "open-ends" hopper car body, the brake gear is underneath the car, between two of the compartments. These cars have 22 small roof hatches, 11 unevenly spaced on each side of the roof. The cars have three discharge bays, each equipped with a butterfly valve. The six small numbered indentations on the car sides are "sampling spigots" at which the car's contents can be drawn for testing.

Photograph by L. W. Shell. Thanks go to George Mathews II for his remarkable shape building, to Lee Gautreaux for his inspiration and research library, and to Otto Wipfel, Joe Morris and Bill Prieger for their work on Bin-suitable coupler values. And special thanks go to Eric Neubauer for his monograph on carbon black cars and his dimensional drawings therein.
