The Prototype
-------------
The Canadian National Railway was the first North American railroad to employ the 'widecab' or 'safety cab' design on their road-switcher type locomotives. The design was created by CN through consultations with employees and locomotive builders for the purpose of creating a more durable and safe environment in the event any accident, and to provide more room and better comfort for the operating crews. CN began ordering all new locomotives with the widecab design in 1973, and continues the practice to this very day. This was made easier when the entire industry adopted the design in 1988, and it became the North American standard with both General Motors & General Electric creating and evolving their own versions of the widecab. However before this time the widecab created some unique diesel locomotive models that are synonymous with the Canadian National Railway. Those being the MLW M-420W, GMDD GP38-2W, GP40-2W, and of course the SD40-2W.

The SD40-2W is simply a standard General Motors Diesel Division model SD40-2 equipped with a widecab, internally there is no difference. CN purchased a total of 123 model SD40-2W locomotives from 1975 to 1980, with road numbers #5241 to #5363 (the number series continued from the last SD40 #5240). Now over thirty years old a number of units have been retired, but CN continues to roster the majority of their SD40-2W's to the present day.

Repaint Info CN SD40-2W #5303
-----------------------------

This model was repainted by Rory Rice with help from Ted Kocyla using photo-realistic textures, and with Steve Callaghan's original painted textures modified with Paint Shop Pro. This is a high-poly model with no LOD levels using textures of 1024x1024, thus it it more graphic/memory intensive than default MSTS locomotives. If you don't have a powerful computer and a good graphic card, this will slow down your FPS (framerates per second). If this is the case, decrease your screen options for MSTS.

Legal Stuff:

FIRST: Please read all the enclosed documents FIRST. This will familiarize you with all the legalities, distribution and modifications associated with this model.

INSTALLATION: Simple - Just point your unzipping program to the drive where MSTS is located. This will create the folders in the TRAINSET file folder: x:\\Program FIles\\Microsoft Games\\Train Simulator\\TRAINS\\TRAINSET\\CN_SD40-2W (or whatever loco of the lot it is) where x: is the drive where MSTS is located , create a consist in the AE and drive on!
Make sure the CN BLACKFOOT/VEGREVILLE ROUTE v2 EQUIPMENT PACK is installed in your MSTS program to run the units correctly, which can be found at the Mophouse Forum under Maple Leaf Tracks.

NOTES: The .eng file physics are by Bob Boudoin, modified by Steve Callaghan. The number lights are texture modified using Shape File Manager, a builder's essential tool from Decapod. They allow the numbers to be lit up on the front of the engine without overloading the sim with active lighting, and they look better (at least I think so).

DISCLAIMER: This is a high poly model without LODs. I am not responsible for any damage it may do to your computer or accessories (like a fried video card!) USE AT YOUR OWN RISK (not quite as bad as ABANDON HOPE ALL YE WHO ENTER HERE, but close!). No permission is granted or implied with regards to the CN logos. They are and remain the exclusive property of CN Rail, and Canadian National has no association in any way, shape, or form with this model. The logos may not be used for commercial puposes without the express permission of CN.

LEGALITIES: Please don't take the model and place it on another web site without first asking. The original model is owned by yours truly and is a co-operative effort for which I refuse to take full credit, as too many people have allowed open use of their TSM project files and beta-tested for me to lay claim to the whole thing. Feel free to criticize, modify, re-skin, fold, bend, spindle or mutilate the model as much as you please, so long as the original contributers are credited in any revision and what you have done to the model is available FREE OF CHARGE. If you are going to build the starship Enterprise with the included TSM files as a start point, tell Captain Kirk that she is MY ship!!
