GIMX Low Bulkhead Intermodal Flatcars for Microsoft Train Simulator.

Original carbody model by George Mathews II.
Original conatiner shapes by George Mathews II.
Texture modifications and wagon modifications by L. W. Shell.

This set includes three carbodies: GIMX 10006, GIMX 10009, and GIMX 10015. The cars are furnished with a variety of container loads, totaling fourteen wagons. For ease of finding these wagons in your consist editor, all wagon names begin with "Flat GIMX 100xx......"

Wagon modifications by L. W. Shell. Couplers are "Bin-compatible" by Otto Wipfel, Joe morris, and BillPrieger. I've used "cushioned" values, not "long" values; you may want to apply your favorite settings. Brake values by L. W. Shell, not as realistic as Prieger's 4.93, but far superior to older default values.

The prototype car is 66 feet long inside, 71 feet overall. The car is identified on UMLER as a "conventional intermodal flatcar." It is equipped to carry three 20 foot shipping containers, typically bulk liquid cylinders. Loads can be chemicals, fuels, food ingredients, water, or even beer. Some tanks are pressurized; others are refrigerated. The cars are designated for container loading only.

The protptype car's unloaded weight is 69,000 pounds, or about 31 metric tons. Each loaded cylinder can weigh up to 79,000 pounds. But a fully loaded car can weigh no more than 263,000 pounds or 119 metric tons. I have given the original car (GIMX 10009 with three EXSIF tanks) a mass of 110 tons. Cars with two loaded tanks are given a mass of 100 tons, and a car with a single loaded tank 67 tons. A car with three tanks, all empty, would have a mass of 43 tons.

The larger tanks have a capacity of about 8340 gallons (or 1127 cubic feet). A common load is diesel fuel, which weighs 900 kg per cubic meter, or 56 pounds per cubic foot (give or take about ten percent--there are different densities of diesel). Thus a standard tank filled with mid-range diesel would have a load weight of 63,000 pounds plus a tare weight of 8000 pounds, 71,000 pounds for the loaded container. (Note that three such loaded tanks is somewhat more than the car can load).

Prototype practice for partially loaded cars: a single container is normally fastened to the center load position; a load of two containers normally utilizes the forward and rear positions, leaving the center vacant.

The wagon file may have more than one sound line entry....one is active, the other(s) commented out. Feel free to move the "comment" to give your car a different sound.

This model is FREEWARE, and no commerical use may be made of it without the express written consent of its builders, L. W. Shell and George Mathews II.

Warning: this model is complex and demanding of your computer's resources. The empty car rates 4.6 Kujus; the loaded car 5.1. That's more than most locomotives.

Textures on the GIMX car bodies are freelance but prototypical. Textures by George Mathews and L. W. Shell based on photos by L. W. Shell.

The EXSIF, Hoyer, TriFleet, and food-service tanks are freelance but semi-prototypical by George Mathews and L. W. Shell. The Dana and TPI tanks are photoskins based on photos from L. W. Shell's personal collection.

car body textures and tank textures may contain portions of photographs by L. W. Shell.

Repaints are allowed, but are subject to the following conditions:
1. Redistribution or uploading of such repaints must be done ONLY at MopHouse.com. NO EXCEPTIONS!
2. This original README file is to be included in its entirety.
3. No commercial or for-profit use of repaints is allowed without the express written consent of the Shell and Mathews.

For repainters, we will soon furnish at MopHouse a GIMX repainting kit, complete with templates, a guide to the swatches that paint various parts of the model, and a how-to on manipulating the alpha channel to allow for the appearance of large container, small container, or no container in each of the three load positions of the freight animation.

Installation: Extract the contents of the zip file to your trainset folder--a folder named "GIMX_bulkhead_flats" will automatically be created. Alternately, unzip to your desktop or other "safe place" and then move the set to your trainset folder. Place these cars in consists using your favorite consist editor.

Feel free to swap the freight animations from one carbody to another--you will need some knowledge of editing wagon files to do this, and you will want to BACKUP your work before starting such a task.
