JMHX 57425
Thrall-built 4727 cf carbon black hopper for Microsoft Train Simulator

Repaint of george Mathews' FURX 6041. Original model by George Mathews. Photo by by L. W. Shell. WAG and SD file modifications by L. W. Shell; texture modifications by L. W. Shell.

JMHX 57425 is an example of cars dedicated to hauling carbon black (think soot, laser toner or lampblack). Carbon black is usually manufactured where natural gas is abundant, and is used primarily in the manufacture of tires, and is also used to make toners, pigments, and inks. The JMHX reporting mark belongs to the J. M. Huber Corp.

This car is not quite true to prototype. The authentic JMHX 57425 was an older-style carbon black car, with 16 panels on the car side, not 13 as depicted in this model.

These cars have 22 small roof hatches, 11 unevenly spaced on each side of the roof. The cars have three discharge bays, each equipped with a butterfly valve. The six small numbered indentations on the car sides are "sampling spigots" at which the car's contents can be drawn for testing.

Thanks go to George Mathews II for his remarkable shape building, to Lee Gautreaux for his inspiration and research library, and to Otto Wipfel, Joe Morris and Bill Prieger for their work on Bin-suitable coupler values. And special thanks go to Eric Neubauer for his monograph on carbon black cars and his dimensional drawings therein.

George and I welcome your comments. Please use this model on your MSTS layout and tell us what you think. Send your comments to L. W. Shell at shellw@bellsouth.net
