A pictorial history of Alco RS-3 LS&I 1604
Thanks to J. Meyland, B. Nicholson, and A. Inserra for this study of 1604 over time. According to Jim, this Alco RS-3 was built in September 1950 with the serial number of 78301. Starting as No. 1504, it was later numbered 1604 (photo by Brian, Munising, 1979) and spent most of its service with the LS&I on the line between Little Lake and Munising. After regular scheduled service to Munising was discontinued in about 1979, 1604 was stationed in Munising to service the Kimberly-Clark paper mill there. It was moved from Munising to Eagle Mills on 4 August 1989, the same day as the Munising line was sold to Wisconsin Central. It was retired and sold September 1989 to Clint Jones, and stored at Eagle Mills. Used on short-lived Wisconsin & Michigan, then stored in Mellon, Wisconsin. Minnesota Commercial bought 1604 (photo by Andy, Nov. 1998, Midaway Station) in 1998. Unit 1604 then awaited refurbishment (photo by Andy, Dec. 1998) and conversion to a B Unit in 1999. It was then repainted and renumbered as MNNR 1B (photo by Andy, Nov. 1999, Midway Roundhouse).
