ÿþCentral Railroad of New Jersey Class FD-43 #78

CNJ78 Version 1.0

July 10th, 2005

Original model and Textures by Frank Musick.

Physics and sound by Matt Imbrogno

SOME HISTORY:

Immediate predecessors to the more famous Baldwin DR-4-4-1500 "Sharks, the original DR-4-4-1500 production units were "Babyface" units ordered by the Central Railroad of New Jersey in September 1945. Because of shortages and labor issues after World War Two, the first A-B-A set was not delivered until November 1947. Designated 70-K-71 these units were joined by another twelve in 1948. Set 78-S-79 was the last delivered, arriving at Jersey City on September 26th, 1948. They were to be the last Baldwin cab units purchased for freight service by CNJ. All of the units remained in service until the mid 1960's

Both the "Babyface" and "Shark" versions of the DR-4-4-1500 were eclipsed by the highly refined Baldwin RF-16 in 1950.

This model of number 78 attempts to represent the unit as it appeared in the late 1940's

PHYSICS:

I'll let Matt handle this one..."The DRs have the

power to lug heavy trains at low speed, yet are still able to get up to 70

mph on a passenger run. They are versatile and powerful.

A note about operating them; you'll need to be carefull on the throttle when

starting off. I've put alot of power in the motors, but they're limited by

the adheasion settings, which are precisly set for the actual TE ratings.

This means these units take a little more skill than usual to operate.

Known Bugs:

I found that the Dynamic Breaks don't work. The controller settings are

messed up by the combined controller setup for the DB and the Throttle. I

have not yet found how to fix this."

Matt is working on the dynamic brake issue. A patch will be uploaded once the problem's been resolved. We're open to any feedback or help with getting it working.

Have fun with it.

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS:

You should be able to just unzip the file into your Train Simulator Trainset directory.

REQUIREMENTS:

This locomotive is set-up to alias sound and cab files from other authors. Files required are E-3234.ZIP and BLWsound.zip. BLWsound.zip can be found in the download section of www.kelticsylk.com

This model has a high poly count. The unit uses appoximately 11,000 polygons. I made no attempt at LOD. This may cause some frame rate issues on slower computers with less powerful video cards. My own computer is a 3 Ghz Celeron with a GeForce FX5200. With the model running with a 50 car train in MSTS on the Lehigh Valley Route at 1600 x 1200 32 bit, I'm getting about 9 frames per second (fps).

The main textures are 1024 x 1024 pixel resolution. I have been made aware that some video cards cannot handle the 1024 x 1024 resolution and these textures will cause MSTS to crash. On such systems these textures will have to be reduced to 512 x 512 pixels in order for MSTS to function properly. This can be done with the better graphics software (I use PaintShop Pro).

THANKS TO:

Matt Imbrugo for the physics and sound set made from recordings of Magma Railway #10, a DRS 6-6-1500 he operates at the Arizona Railway Museum.

The gang at Train-Sim.com, who have always offered their support, encouragement, and expertise.

If I've forgotten anyone it wasn't on purpose...

As far as support goes, I'm not sure what help I can give. If you do run into a problem with

the model I can be reached at my web site www.kelticsylk.com...Just hit the return fire button to e-mail me.
