Miscellaneous Sound Source files for Microsoft Train Simulator, by Chuck Zeiler

Unzip this zip file into a temporary folder. You can use any or all the sounds in any route. Each Sound Source consists of three files: the .wav file (the actual sound), the .sms file (information for MSTS), and a line of text to be placed into the route's ssource.dat file (more information for MSTS).

Place the .wav file(s) and the .sms file(s) into your route's Sound folder. Open the file Ssource_dat.txt in WORDPAD (this file has been saved in Unicode). Copy all the lines that are associated with the files that you placed in the Sound folder. Paste these lines in the ssource.dat file in the route's root folder.

Example:

To place cow sounds in the MSTS original Marias Pass route, copy these two files:

cow_one_moo.wav
cowonemoo.sms

and paste them into the Sound folder under the USA2 folder.

Then open (in Wordpad) the ssource.dat file found in the USA2 folder, then open (in Wordpad) the Ssource_dat.txt file included in this zip, and copy the line:

Sound ( Name ( "Cow 1 Moo" )	FileName ( "cowonemoo.sms" ) )

and paste this line into the ssource.dat file. Save and exit.

Place the sounds in the route by using the Route Editor to place the cow sounds (found under Sound Sources in the MORE Object selection window) near your herd of cows.

A couple of versions of cow sounds are included, and by placing the various cow sounds near each other, the cows can "talk" to each other. Pauses have been built into the different sounds, so they don't overlap each other.

The flange squeals and screeches are best placed near the middle of a sharply curved track. If placed not too close to the track, you won't hear the sound until it's appropriate. Since it is a sound loop, if your track curves over or near itself (like a return loop) you will hear the flange squeal over and over, so careful placement is recommended. There is some pause built into the loop. You can make the sound quieter by placing it away from the track.

All the Sound Source files in this zip are set to ScalabilityGroup 5, which means that to hear them, the Quality of Sounds slider in the Sound Options of MSTS must be set to High.
